“THE HOLLOW” (“Pero Qué Bonita Es La Vida”) is my debut feature film, which I am directing, producing, and starring in. It is a magical realism drama with a Queer female lead. This script that I wrote, comes from a place very close to my heart– back in Autumn of 2022, my favorite person, my aunt Sarita, transcended into her next life in the most unexpected of ways. This experience left me with a visceral feeling of confusion and hollowing grief that I have been navigating ever since. In Mexico, we call this experience “el duelo de la pérdida” (the duel of loss). “THE HOLLOW” is a story that follows RENÉ, who navigates the loss of her favorite person as a supernatural being begins to appear in her world, hunting her as it remains stuck in the limbo between life and death. The supernatural and magical themes we explore in “THE HOLLOW” are inspired by the mythology of the Mictlán– the sacred place where souls find their eternal rest in Aztec/Mexica culture.
We are scheduled to begin Production in late Autumn of 2026 for about a week, and finish in mid February when we’ll be shooting the second half of the film. As an independent film, we are working with a skeleton crew, most are my frequent collaborators as we use most of our own equipment to facilitate our unconventional shooting schedule. Our budget is $20,000 USD. At this moment, we have locked about 50% of said budget, which we will use for our Production needs and the rest for Post-Production. We currently have:
